12 Tips: How to increase the speed of your computer or laptop?

Machines have transformed our lives much more than anything in the 21st century. Be it a student, freelancer or a professional, Laptops and PCs have become part and parcel of everyone’s lives. But, it is very irritating when the screen stucks suddenly or becomes slow all of a sudden. How to get rid of slow computers? How to increase the speed of your laptop? Any tip to increase the speed of the laptop?

1. Check if laptop has SSD or HDD type storage

Currently, Solid state drives (SSDs) and hard disk drives (HDDs) are two options in the market. The type of storage a laptop uses matters for its performance, including power usage. If your laptop has HDD type storage, it’s time to upgrade. Go to a computer shop tell them your laptop speed is slow and you want to add a SSD, it won’t cost much and HDD will not be wasted you can have both SSD and HDD in your computer. Don’t try to do this on your own if you don’t have technical knowledge.

2. RAM size

RAM size is one of the factors that affects your computer performance. RAM size less than 4GB is not recommended even for basic work. It’s better to upgrade to a higher RAM size to increase the speed of your laptop.

3. Disable one-drive syncing

One-drive is a cloud storage facility by Microsoft that uploads files from the computer to Microsoft servers. If kept on automatic syncing or automatic uploading, One-drive keeps uploading files in the background whenever the PC is running. This affects the performance of the computer or laptop and slows down the speed of your computer. Thus, it is advisable to keep the Auto-Sync feature off to increase the speed.

4. Uninstall unnecessary apps

More apps means more usage of RAM which reduces the efficiency of your computer. Generally, we install too many apps than necessary which increases the load on processors and slows down the speed.

5. Disable automatic windows updates

Windows updates are sometimes very irritating as it takes up a lot of time and data. But what very few know is updating windows in the background consumes memory and ultimately slows down the PC. As updating Windows is very crucial, it is recommended to manually update windows every month instead of keeping it on Auto-update.

6. Turn off notifications

Notifications in laptops and PCs are mostly unwanted. It is always advisable to turn off all notifications except some very important ones. This helps in smooth running of the system and increase the speed of laptop.

Go to Settings > System > Notifications and Actions > Turn off Notifications from Apps and other senders.

7. Disable animations and visual graphics

Too many animations and graphics mean processors will be used to their utmost capacity for every work we do on laptops. If you give more priority to speed than display, turning off all animations and visual graphics is the best option for you.

Note: It does not affect the quality of work on the computer but defiantly helps in increasing the computer performance.

8. Disable automatic start-ups

Some apps in Windows start automatically upon switching on the system. This also slows down the PC as some unnecessary apps may start though it could have been done away with.

Right click on the Windows Icon > Task Manager > Startup. Disable all unnecessary apps.

Note: Do not disable any critical app as it may affect the performance.

9. Clean up the mess in your windows (Clean your storage)

The processor slows down when the storage has very low space left. Try deleting unnecessary files, clearing your Recycle Bin and transferring large files to an external storage device like a Pen Drive. Also, Windows has a cool feature of Storage Sense. Clean up the mess in your windows to increase the speed of your laptop.

Go to Settings > System > Storage > Turn on Storage Sense. It uses AI to free up space you don’t need.

10. Turn on ultimate performance in windows

Did you know that laptops and PCs are intentionally designed to not run at their maximum speed? In order to save battery, Laptops and Computers are made in such a way that they give equal priority to both battery and performance, i.e., maintain a balance between the two. If your laptop stays mostly at home, you can turn on the Ultimate Power option from Windows’ settings. This feature instructs the system to give more priority to performance than battery and thus, your laptop will run at its maximum possible speed.

Note: It is not advisable for those who go for outdoor work and keep their laptop uncharged most of the time.

11. Install an antivirus

Viruses were and still are the biggest threats to electronic gadgets. Using anti-virus helps in detecting harmful viruses on your laptops or computers and protects your system. It also improves the performance of the computer thus increase the speed. There are some free antiviruses too like Avast that give protection from most of the popular viruses. Use licenced antivirus software, free antivirus softwares are not recommended.

12. Reset your computer

This should be your LAST RESORT if none of the above tips work for you. In case your laptop or computer is still not functioning at a proper speed, you must hard reset your computer. Do take note that this will wipe out all data from your computer, so store all necessary files, photos, etc. on an external hard-drive or upload it to One-drive, Google drive, etc.
