5 Reasons Why We Need Special Discussion Sessions for Children in Schools

Children are the real wealth of our nation but they are also the most vulnerable and delicate section of our population. They are much like the seeds with latent capability to develop into huge trees and it is our duty to provide water and sunshine to these seedlings. Just like plants need proper space for good growth, our children also need a space where they can feel free to express themselves.

One of the ways to provide this ‘space‘ is to introduce special discussion sessions for children in schools. Here are some points which advocate for the need of introducing special discussion sessions for children in schools —

1. Children need a friendly ambience to develop

Children are sensitive and get easily affected by what they hear or observe in their surroundings. When there are problems like domestic violence, financial constraints etc. in the family, it has been observed that children stop taking interest in studies or sports and don’t even like to talk to their classmates.

Sometimes when parents get frustrated with the child’s naughtiness, they tell the kid that he / she can’t do anything in life. But while saying this, they are unaware of the fact that these kinds of statements make deep impressions on a child’s mind. They can even fix this somewhere in their subconscious mind that they are not worth anything. This can become fatal in the long run if the child chooses not to speak up what he / she feels. Increase in suicide rates among students is an outcome of situations like these. Hence, it is essential to encourage children to open up their hearts and participate in discussions in order to know what they are going through.

2. Real learning takes place during discussions

It’s not books which make a person learned but the experiences and circumstances which he / she comes across in different phases of life. Special discussion sessions in schools can help children in developing their own opinions about things. In these sessions, they can be asked about what they think of the people around them and about the cultures, traditions and manners which they are bound to follow. These discussions will prove to be highly beneficial for the children in developing a positive outlook towards the society.

Educators should take care that they encourage children to forge ahead on the right path but not as their mentors or guides but as friends who are quite empathetic and can relate to them.

3. Discussions with children can prevent social evils like child abuse

There are no two opinions on the fact that the very first step to eliminate any evil from the society is to spread awareness. So, the first thing which needs to be done towards the elimination of child abuse is to hold proper and detailed discussions with children about different forms of child abuse, causes behind this immoral act, how to deal with the problem etc. This can be very instrumental in ensuring that our children do not fall prey to the bad elements present in the society. We must realize that it is our duty to make our children aware of the social problems and challenges.

4. Discussions can reduce generation gap

If we succeed in making our children principled, capable and efficient, no social problem or evil can ever take place in our society. And this can be achieved by reducing the generation gap which is outspread in our society.

Discussion sessions in schools can prove to be very effective in bridging this gap between the elders and the children. These sessions will provide a good and effective platform for educators to share their experiences with students, enhance interaction with them and to understand them better. Thus, these sessions will definitely help in overall development of the children if organized properly.

5. Special discussion sessions will enrich and empower the children

Through discussion sessions, children will get an opportunity to learn from others’ perspectives and observations. It will be an enriching experience for the students which will make them more tolerant, open-minded ,cooperative and accommodating in nature. These discussion sessions will empower the children by making them realize that their voice is to be strengthened and they are to be heard.

The role of educational institutions is to help the children unleash their real inner selves and make them stronger than ever. It is their primary duty to undertake initiatives for children’s holistic development and to make these tender buds bloom into beautiful flowers.
